New Research Sheds Light On Breast Cancer Aggressiveness

Early cancer cells experience a great deal of ‘pressure’ as they grow in restricted space. One would expect this to impede growth, but some cancer cells seem to benefit from this.

Researchers at the Center for Cancer Biology (Adelaide University) found that breast cancer cells use this pressure to their advantage. In their laboratory models of breast cancer, tumours that had been exposed to mechanical compression grew larger than uncompressed tumours.

To gain a better understanding of the study, The Wire’s Shaun Dourado spoke with Dr. Sarah Boyle. The co-lead author broke down what these “mechanical pressures’ are, and highlighted the therapeutic potential of the findings.
