The Australian Electoral Commission has confirmed a probe into teal independent Monique Ryan’s alleged communist ties.
The Kooyong MP claims her work with Chinese-Australians communities opened her campaign to political scrutiny, echoing backlash faced by Peter Dutton for his recent support of wealthy Chinese nationals emigrating to Australia.
Ryan has been the subject of intense criticism surrounding donation disclosures and political transparency, alongside independent politician’s Kate Chaney and Allegra Spender.
Australian National University political historian Dr Joshua Black discusses the divide between the major parties and independent politicians.
