The Federal Government has doubled the application fee for some post-study work visas for international students, raising the cost of the Temporary Graduate visa, also known as the 485 visa, from $2,300 to $4,600.
The visa allows international graduates to remain in Australia and work for up to two years after completing their studies, giving them the opportunity to gain work experience and potentially move into longer-term skilled migration pathways.
The international education sector has criticised the move, with some accusing the government of treating international students as a “cash cow” to boost budget revenue.
Phil Honeywood, Chief Executive of the International Education Association of Australia, today met with Education Minister Jason Clare to raise the sector’s concerns. Speaking with The Wire’s Patrick Dunstan, he was asked for his reaction to the government’s decision to double the visa fees.
