Blood and plasma donation ban lifted from July

Recent changes have been made that allows for gay and bisexual men as well as transgender women to donate blood and plasma, greatly increasing much needed supply. In addition to allowing a more inclusive population for donations, those who take PrEP will also be allowed to donate, an Australian first.

Lifeblood’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr Jo Pink, anticipates an extra 24,000 donors and 95,000 extra donations of plasma to be made each year.

Donations will be accepted from the 14th of July, 2025.
